Hello and welcome to the Happy News Network, your one and only source for news that doesn’t make you depressed. If you are looking for regular news programs, I suggest you tune in to NBC or any other channel for updates on the latest shootings, trials, and arrests. My name is Melissa, and I will be your host today.
In our first story today, the Illinois Department of Human Services started a program to help African Americans who do not go see doctors. The health care program targets African Americans in barber shops. Nurses go to barber shops to do simple tests like blood pressure in order to catch problems like diabetes or heart conditions. It may be a strange location, but if it gets healthcare out, I guess people can’t complain.
In Aurora, a man broke the stationary bike record by riding for an estimated 177 hours over the course of nine days. In accordance with Guinness rules, George was given 5 minutes of rest for every hour he rode. These minutes could roll over to allow for longer rest periods. In total he slept for nine hours, but never for more than about 10 minutes at a time. George had broken the world record twice before, but a bookkeeping error disqualified him the first time, and the second time someone else broke his record a month later. He hopes that this record will be certified in time for the next World Records publication. Keep a look out!
Finally, a 24 year-old girl was recently granted a degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Engineering after six years. Lucy had been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy at the age of four. By the time she was 9 she was confined to a wheelchair. For the six years that Lucy was in college, her mother helped her to all of her classes, helping her study, packing the right books and notebooks, and making sure that everything was in order. In total, her mother sat with her through 2,100 hours of classes alone, not counting studying and meetings with professors. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.
I hope you have enjoyed the first edition of the Happy News Network. I would appreciate any and all feedback about the segment. Have a great week!
